These works-on-paper take one block of 16 numerals from John Cage’s piece, and translate them into an “assisted self-portrait.” (You can see more about 640 numbers… and my relationship with it here and here.
For each of these works, I consulted the numbers to ask how they would like to be represented on the page. Questions included “How many decorative elements should accompany the verse on the page? Which of four methods of decorating? In which quadrant(s) of the page?”, etc. Our imagined conversation varied from image to image, so that each one became a distinct individual.
