Sketchbook (Accordion-fold)
Sketchbook (Accordion-fold)
This 26-page blank book is ideal for use as an innovative sketchbook or as the basis for an art project. The pages of the accordion are a heavy art paper (250 gsm Stonehenge warm white) that is good for almost any media, from pencil to watercolor or sumi ink. The leaves are hinged together to form the accordion. The paper is thick enough that there shouldn’t be any bleed-through, and the back surface may be used for sketching as well, which would double the page count.* The covers are made from book board covered with a shibori-dyed cotton fabric manufactured by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. I convert the fabric into book cloth by adding a layer of sekishu paper to the back to prevent glue from seeping through the weave.
Accordion books make excellent, flexible sketchbooks because the artist can think in terms of a single page, a two-page spread, or the full length of the unfolded book.
Individual pages are 4.75” x 7”; each page spread is 9.5” x 7”; and the fully open accordion is 123.5” x 7”.
*I don’t include the back surface in the product page count because it is interrupted at every fourth page by a hinge. The hinges consist of an extra layer of the same paper, though, so if you use this as an informal sketchbook, they shouldn’t be a hindrance to using the back, too.
