Camino sketchbook (Coptic-bound)
Camino sketchbook (Coptic-bound)
This line of Coptic-bound journals and sketchbooks is deeply meaningful to me in several ways. Making each batch of wooden covers puts me back in the presence of my late father, who was an avid, talented amateur woodworker. The scallop-shell design symbolizes the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, which my wife and I walked in 2025. And the Coptic binding and wooden covers reflect my deep interest in the history of bookbinding.
The covers are 1/8” Baltic birch panel plywood, sealed with PVA size and sanded by hand. For this larger, sketchbook version, the pages are a slightly toothy, heavy fine-art paper (250 gsm Stonehenge cream), excellent for a wide range of media. The Coptic binding allows the book to lie open perfectly flat, for ease of use.
