“whistling back / to the cardinal / an octave lower”
This series of ‘letterpress haiga,’ or haiku artworks, is based on a haiku I wrote years ago and originally published in the small journal South by Southeast. The text of the poem is letterpress printed using hand-set metal type on my tabletop Kelsey Excelsior printing press.
Each copy is unique — printed on different papers in different sizes, and illustrated using different techniques. Like much of my work, they’re an example of a genre of artwork I call the handmade multiple, combining elements of artisanal craft and the democratic appeal of the multiple.
